Trees for Cities...

Trees for Cities started life in 1993 as Trees for London when a group of young Londoners recognised the need for more trees in the capital. The founding vision, inspired by Jake Kempston who is still one of the charity’s trustees today, was to establish a charity that would be highly practical and would work with local communities to get more trees planted and green those areas most in need of greening.

With Charity Commission approval, Trees for London was established with the following mission: “to advance the education of the public in the appreciation of trees and their amenity value, and in furtherance of this the planting and protection of trees everywhere, and in particular inner city areas”. Initially money was raised through fundraising club nights as young Londoners danced through the night to raise funds for tree planting. The founding mission and ethos of the charity is as true today as it was in 1993.

In 2003, on our tenth anniversary, we changed our name to Trees for Cities, largely in response to requests for support and advice from cities around the world.

In addition to tree planting, the charity is now involved in a wide range of activities that include educational work with schools and community groups, vocational training in arboriculture and horticulture, re-landscaping the public realm, campaigning, and yes, we’re still partying! Four of the charity’s current trustees (Julian Blake, Jane Bruton, Jake Kempston and Belinda Winder), have been involved since the earliest days.

Tolerance International...

Tolerance International was set up to pioneer an all-inclusive approach to two pressing global issues facing our world today: global warming and extreme poverty. It is the first international NGO to have developed a strategy that combines efforts to combat climate change and to eradicate extreme poverty simultaneously. This is our Human & Habitat (H&H) Campaign.

Since 2001, Tolerance International-UK has provided assistance to the needy and vulnerable communities. Realising that aid and relief are inseparable from prevention and education, we developed a series of vocational education and lifeskill development workshops which could be adapted to different circumstances in different countries. We now work in partnership with secondary schools in the UK, with local communities, civil society organisations, and governments in Africa, Asia, and South America to bring environmental and social justice around the world.

TICOS...

TICOS is a tailor made service for all travel and tourism related companies seeking to understand and react to the causes and impacts of climate change. Although most of the focus to date has been on CO2 emissions, mainly from air travel, many companies from other sectors of the industry are seeking to develop programmes which both contribute to a lessening of emissions and at the same time achieve wider sustainable development objectives. Please read our operational procedure for full details of the TICOS service.

Many of the leaders in the travel and tourism industry recognise that they have a key role to play in the development of programmes to reduce and offset the effects of carbon produced as a part of the holidays or transport that they sell. Those with vision understand that a degraded environment and complex changes in weather patterns will have a significant impact upon the whole future of the industry especially in those destinations most at risk.

TICOS works with many industry partners including industry associations, tour operators, service providers and those engaged in transport. We develop specific projects that both help to achieve greenhouse gas reductions and at the same time support local communities, the environment and education.
Many TICOS projects are managed by members of IUCN World Commission for Protected Areas and are located within World Heritage Sites where there is a strong tourism element. Both UNESCO and IUCN have expressed their support for TICOS in its attempts to develop projects which both reduce carbon emissions and help to protect and enhance the special places of the world. Both organisations see TICOS as extremely important in the precedents it sets to balance climate change with its impact upon World Heritage sites.

The Converging World...

The Converging World is a UK based charity that aims to address issues arising from social inequality, creating mechanisms which link communities in the developed and developing world.
Our approach aims to reduce the gap between the energy-rich and energy-poor, the opportunity-rich and opportunity-poor and to work towards a world where socially there are equal opportunities for all.

We seek donations from communities and individuals in the developed world that will address this purpose of social convergence. We use all donations to invest in renewable energy projects in developing countries that are fully accredited and verified to the highest standards possible. We channel all the profits arising from these investments into initiatives that fund clean, sustainable and low carbon economic development.

Donating to The Converging World will help us achieve our aims to…

1. Implement more renewable energy
2. Support communities to adapt to climate change
3. Reduce CO2 emissions
